Impressions of Catania in Sicily

Catania was the first city I visited in Sicily. I found it very charming, rough, Italian, a bit run down, and very romantic.

Strolling the markets and shopping fresh produce from locals in Catania was one of my favorite things. There are so many juicy fruits, amazing cheese and many yummy treats. Fresh oranges from Mount Etna, anyone?

Sicilian snacks

granita

Granita is a Sicilian specialty. Related to Sorbet, but much creamier and mostly eaten with a soft brioche (you take the the top off and put the icy cream into the bun). There are all different kinds of flavors, some come with cream, and my favorite is pistacchio (no cream, but brioche please).

Being located right at the sea, Catania serves a variation of fresh fish and seafood. I loved the little snack portions of “fritto misto” that you just have with a beer on the side at a little food stall.

Botanical garden Catania

Catania has also a botanical garden, which is a bit hidden near the university campus. It is also pretty small, but has giant cacti, lots of palm trees and overall photogenic ambience.
